Something I crave in the winter almost as much as a soothing cup of hot tea is a steaming mug of creamy hot chocolate. I love that this recipe combines these two classic winter sips into one easy and perfect giftable do-it-yourself coco mix.
Dark chocolate naturally carries some citrus, fruity, and floraly, characteristics. Those very same qualities shine through in a classic, bergamot citrus-infused Earl Grey black tea. So pairing them together just makes sense.
This recipe takes minutes to make and you can portion it out and package it up in cute little jars or tins for holiday gifts…think teacher gifts, hostess gifts, office gifts, etc. Chances are, anyone you give it to will be deliciously impressed. You might want to make a double batch so you have some in your own cupboard all winter long!
Earl Grey Hot Chocolate Mix
Recipe adapted for Teatulia® by Tea Foodie from Martha Stewart’s Homemade Hot Chocolate recipe.
Makes about 4 cups of hot chocolate mix, enough to make about 20 cups of hot chocolate. Recipe easily doubles if you want to make more for holiday gifts.
Ingredients:
½ cup dark or bittersweet chocolate chips*
½ cup loose leaf Teatulia Earl Grey Tea
1¾ cups granulated sugar
1¼ cups Dutch cocoa powder*
Notes:
*Spring for the good stuff and use really high quality chocolate chips and cocoa powder for the best tasting hot chocolate.
Preparation:
To make the hot chocolate mix:
- Use a spice grinder or food processor to grind the Earl Grey tea as fine as possible; it will mix into the hot chocolate best if its finely ground.
- Use the same spice grinder or food processor to grind the chocolate chips as fine as possible; they will dissolve into the hot chocolate better this way.
- In a large bowl, whisk the ground tea and ground chocolate with the sugar and cocoa until thoroughly combined.
- Transfer the mix to cute, sealable jars and label. Be sure and include the easy instructions to make hot chocolate (below) on the label if you’re giving these as gifts. The mix will last for months if stored in well-sealed containers.
To make a mug of hot chocolate:
Whisk 2 tablespoons of the hot chocolate mix into 1 cup of hot milk or dairy alternative, like almond milk, soy milk, or coconut milk.
